The theme of this year's LIESOL Conference is "Multicultural, Multimodal, and Multisensory Approaches to Teaching ELLs," highlighting the need for ESL and content-area teachers to use all available avenues to assist their students in becoming 21st century English speakers. Interactive workshops and presentations will focus on teaching approaches and strategies that address the diverse cultures of New York's ESL student population and employ multimodal and multisensory techniques for teaching language.

The conference will be held in Kellenberg Hall at Molloy College, 8:30 AM - 1:30 PM. Preregistration is open until April 4th!

There will be a total of 18 workshops to choose from, including the following topics:

  • Introduction to Blogging with ESL Students
  • Technology without Borders: Just a Click Away!
  • Night at the Races: A Multisensory Approach to Teaching Math Concepts to ELLs
  • Creating Visual Poetry
  • Extensive Reading with the Oxford Bookworms Library
  • Building Background Knowledge in Adult ESL Learners
  • Music and Movement for a Visual Generation: Combining the Auditory, Kinesthetic, and Visual Learning Styles to Inspire ELLs
  • Reading Stratgies for Adult ELLs
  • Co-teaching with the ESL Specialist
  • Success with the SIOP Model
  • Something Got Lost in Translation: The Role of Interpreters/Translators in Schools

There will be many more topics addressing ELLs' needs ranging from Kindergarten to Grade 12 as well as in Adult settings.

•Long Island ESOL Awards

LI ESOL is pleased to announce that once again we are seeking nominations for two awards. One will be given to an outstanding ESL teacher and one to a teacher candidate. To recognize the exceptional work of the award winners, we will grant a $500.00 monetary prize. In order to generate a large pool of candidates, we are inviting you to nominate an ESL teacher or ESL teacher candidate (bachelor's or master's level student who is studying to become an ESL teacher).

Nominees must meet the following qualification requirements:

  • Long Island Residence or attending a Long Island College or University
  • Current enrollment in a TESOL teacher education program
  • If seeking a BS degree, successful completion of 112 or more credits (GPA 3.5 or better)
  • If seeking and MS or MA degree, successful completion of 18 or more credits (GPA 3.5 or better)
  • Availability to accept the award in person on April 12, 2008

Nominees must meet the following qualification requirements:

  • Long Island Residence or working in a Long Island educational institution
  • Full-time ESL teacher in any grade level in a Long Island (Nassau/Suffolk) school or institution of adult/higher education at the time of the award
  • Full-time ESL teaching employment for at least three consecutive years prior to receiving this award
  • NYS Teaching Certificate in ESOL (PreK-12) or Master's Degree if employed in an adult ESL Education Program
  • Availability to accept the award in person on April 12, 2008
Nominations will be accepted through March 21, 2008. Please complete the appropriate form and email all nomination information to Meredith Van Schuyler at longisland@nystesol.org. We hope to see you at our professional conference at Molloy College on April 12th!
