ESOL Supervision

New York State has students of limited English proficiency in all types of programs at all levels. It is imperative that institutions provide LEP students with instruction in English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) leading to profi ciency in English. To this end, instruction must be provided by teachers qualified in the discipline of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

Teachers of ESOL need the assistance of supervisors and ESOL program administrators who are at least as qualified as those they supervise, and experienced in the same kind of program with the same kind of students. Only in this way can programs for students of ESOL consistently accomplish their purpose.
