Meet the NYS TESOL Member of the Month
for September 2018
Long Island Region
Marcus has been an ESL(ENL) Teacher with the Great Neck Public Schools
for over thirty years, implementing programs that highlight the
strengths and achievements of Great Neck's ESL population. Marcus also
has provided parent outreach programs, staff development to her non-ESL
colleagues, and oversees a storytelling workshop for ELLs. Although
Susanne has just retired from her teaching position with the Great Neck
Public Schools, she will continue her PD work there. Susanne has taught
English in China, France, Costa Rica, Israel, and Mexico. She holds NYS
Teaching Certification in ESL, Spanish and French 7-12 and a
professional certificate in School Leadership from Fordham University,
where she was selected to a participate in Fordham University’s Long
Island Bilingual/ESL Teacher Leadership Academy (BETLA).
As the former Project Director of InterAgency Council's CLD/ELL
training program, Marcus developed curricula and provided training to
special education personnel on issues of first and second language
acquisition, bilingualism, learners with special learning needs, and
cross-cultural communication. Her research interests are in the
development of appropriate program models for ELLs with special needs
and circumstances. Susanne taught as an adjunct in the TESOL Programs
of CUNY Hunter College, Molloy College and SUNY Stony Brook. Marcus is
an ENL trainer for NYSUT’s Education, Learning, Trust (ELT), offering
courses to NYSUT members on all issues related to English Language
A two-time Past President of NYS TESOL and member of past Executive
Boards, Marcus is a frequent presenter at our Annual Conferences,
NYSABE and other professional conferences. Marcus is the recipient of
the 1999 NYS TESOL Outstanding Teacher Award and 2008 Honoree of the
Hispanic Community of Great Neck.
From the get-go, NYS TESOL has provided Marcus with the collegial
community to grow as a professional. From the onset of her career, NYS
TESOL has provided her with a forum in which to grow professionally and
personally. She has made life-long friends through NYS TESOL and will
always be energized by the organization!
