Meet the NYS TESOL Member of the Month
for November 2018

George Morris

George Morris
  New York City Region

George Morris began his education career in 1970 in the Yonkers Public Schools,  teaching Spanish, Latin, and French for the first few years, and then changed to the teaching of English as a Second Language, (now known as ENL) which became his main specialty.  He taught in Yonkers for 32 years, mostly at the high school level.  While teaching, he also sponsored high school senior class activities and student government, and was theatre director for several years.  He also served the district as an English-Spanish translator for literature connected with magnet programs.

After retiring from full-time teaching in 2002, George continued with the school district until 2014 as a part-time intake examiner for English Language Learners, testing new students for ENL and Bilingual services, regularly using his other world languages in his work.  In addition, he was a volunteer ENL teacher at the Adult Learning Center in New Rochelle, from 1999 until it closed in 2016.  Currently, he is planning a Workplace ENL course for adults employed at Iona College, which he will begin teaching in January.

A native of the South Bronx, where he attended elementary and high schools, George then attended Iona College in New Rochelle, where he still resides, receiving a B.A. in 1970, and M.S. in Ed. in 1974, with concentrations in Spanish and Education.

George has been an active member of the NYS TESOL for 42 years, attending, planning, and working at numerous regional and statewide conferences, which he refers to as a "mobile graduate school" for professional development . He served two terms as president, in 1997 and 2004, and has continued to assist with the annual fall conference.

In his home community, George has been on the staff of the "Relig" Catholic Youth Community, a teen youth ministry, since 1966.  He facilitates communications with Spanish-speaking parents and arranges  community-service projects for the students.  He is Immediate Past President of the Interreligious Council of New Rochelle, and actively participates in their refugee-resettlement efforts, serving on the education committee as an ENL specialist.  He also serves as a lay minister and trilingual lector (English, Spanish, and French) at his church.

In his leisure time, George enjoys dining out with friends,  visiting friends and family, travel, music, reading, crossword puzzles, and getting his hands dirty with Habitat for Humanity.
