Deborah O'Brien Smith

Deborah O'Brien-Smith
Long Island Region

Deborah O’Brien-Smith is a full professor at Nassau Community College where she has worked in the Department of Reading and Basic Education since 1984.  Prior to that, she worked for ten years as a Reading teacher at the Mill Neck School for the Deaf.  She is fluent in American Sign Language.  Debbie holds a degree in Deafness Education from Teachers College, Columbia University (MA) and a degree in Reading Education from Queens College (MS).  She has been teaching second language requisition skills to hearing and Deaf students for 43 years, presenting at workshops, attending conferences and writing and assessing ESL course curriculum programs.

Debbie attributes a large part of her professional growth to her affiliation with NYS TESOL.  NYS TESOL membership provided conference workshops and networking opportunities which enabled her to utilize innovative educational techniques in the classroom and gain confidence in her teaching skills. Debbie first attended NYS TESOL conferences, then presented at them.  She was encouraged to publish professional articles in IDIOM, the NYS TESOL publication
These experiences, in turn, motivated her to join the dedicated LI ESOL professionals at Molloy College.  Debbie has been affiliated with LI ESOL for almost twenty years serving as a member of the LI ESOL Professional Conference Committee.

In 2006, Debbie was recognized for superior professional achievement and the ongoing pursuit of excellence when she was awarded the SUNY NYS Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.  In 2013, she received The Outstanding ESL Teacher of the Year Award from LI ESOL in recognition of her exemplary service to English Language Learners.
