Meet the NYS TESOL Member of the Month for May 2017

Wen (Elyssa) Sun, New York City Region

Wen (Elyssa) Sun is a recent graduate of the M.A. TESOL program at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her interest in linguistics prospered when she successfully reached the near-native level of English in the EFL setting using her unique way of learning during high school. Growing up in China where the education system is mainly exam-oriented, she has contemplated much about its erroneous way in English learning and teaching. This drove her to seek out teaching opportunities in areas of diverse cultural and economic backgrounds during her undergraduate years. She has since worked with many ESL learners of diverse proficiency levels ranging from 2nd graders to adults.

Elyssa’s involvement with NYS TESOL began in 2016 when she first volunteered for the Applied Linguistics Winter Conference (ALWC) as a student at TC. She then proceeded to serve as both Conference Chair and Proposals Chair for 2017 ALWC. Her experience on the conference committee has exposed her to a wider variety of research topics, strengthened her work abilities, as well as expanded her professional network. She is looking forward to pursuing more teaching experiences and further education in the future.

As an ESL teacher, it is crucial to keep up with the most current research and keep renovating the methodology. NYS TESOL has provided Elyssa with quick access to the frontier of the academic field and inspired her with the work of fellow colleagues. The student-run conferences have also provided her with the humbling and rewarding experience of learning how conferences come together.
