Maria Hartmann
Long Island Region

I earned my Bachelor's degree from Allegheny College in 1996 and worked in college admissions for several years at Carnegie Mellon University before deciding to go back to school and become an English teacher.  I earned my Master of Arts in Teaching English from Chatham College in 2003.

A Long Island native,  I immediately moved back from Pittsburgh and began teaching at Long Beach High School where I have taught grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 since 2003. Three years ago I was given the opportunity to work with English Language Learners in my 11th grade classes and I knew immediately that this was a population of students who needed a voice and a strong advocate.

I enrolled in the dual certification program at from Molloy College and spent my nights and weekends earning my dual certification. Since working with English Language Learners, I have worked with administration to order novels that are better suited for their reading levels and knowledge of American culture.

In addition, I set up and executed a Donors Choose account to earn donations to purchase standing desks, notebooks, and Spanish-English dictionaries to make the learning experience more comfortable for my students.

I had great pleasure working with my colleagues in December to give all of the English Language Learners in our school a holiday party where they danced, ate, and met new friends. Over such a short time, these students have grown so much and I am incredibly proud to be a part of their journey.

Check out our wonderful annual awards and nominate a colleague this year !
