  June 2018

Tristan Thorne

Tristan Thorne
  New York City Region

Tristan Thorne holds a BA in Language Studies from UC Santa Cruz and an MA in Applied Linguistics from Teachers College, Columbia University. He has taught English in Spain, Japan, and the United States.

In addition to teaching at the American Language Program at Columbia University, Tristan is also a Curriculum Specialist for Tools for Clear Speech, an academic support program at CUNY's Baruch College that improves the oral communication skills of English language learners. His areas of interest include English pronunciation pedagogy, technology in the classroom, and the assessment of second language speaking skills.

Since January 2016, Tristan has had the pleasure of serving as NYS TESOL's New York City Region Co-Chair, a position shared with Jordan Van Horn. This leadership opportunity has allowed him to help organize recurring workshops for the New York City TESOL community, including "Tech in Ten," co-sponsored by Tools for Clear Speech.

Other co-sponsored workshops include a semesterly writing workshop at Columbia University, coordinated by the American Language Program's Babi Kruchin, and "Night at the Museum," spearheaded by Jordan and co-sponsored by The Center for Immigrant Education and Training at LaGuardia College.

What Tristan enjoys most about being a NYS TESOL member are the myriad possibilities for professional development, and he looks forward to collaborating with educators from all Special Interest Groups in the future.
