Meet the NYS TESOL Member of the Month
for February 2015

Katya Kats
Capital Region

Congratulations to Katya Kats, an elementary school ESL teacher in the Cohoes City School District in our Capital Region, and the newest NYS TESOL Member of the Month! The colleague nominating our February winner affirms that Katya does not allow her job title to restrict the reach of her influence. She is not only committed to her students, but also to their families. Katya holds an ESL Welcome Picnic in the beginning of each school year to meet all of the families whose children she will be teaching. She serves as an interpreter during parent-teacher conferences for families of her own students, and for any other families in need of translation services. In addition, Katya volunteers to help parents after her work day, with health and legal matters. After school, Katya can often be found in her classroom helping her students with homework and assignments. Her colleague states that Katya's own experiences as an emigre and English Language Learner give her a vantage point that greatly assists the families she serves, while also allowing her to share authentic knowledge and ideas with her students that have global implications. Katya goes out of her way to help ensure that all of her ELL learners and their families have a smooth transition to their school district and to the country.
