for December 2018

Tilla Alexander

Tilla Alexnder
  New York City Region

Tilla Alexander is a retired ESOL teacher who taught at the Office of Adult & Continuing Education for more than 21 years.  Although she has retired from her paid job, she is still dedicated to the field of teaching immigrant students English.  At this time, she is volunteer tutoring for the CIET at La Guardia Community College and volunteer teaching for the organization, Venezuelan Immigrant and Aid, started by her ex-student, Niurka Melendez and her husband Hector Alfredo Arguinzones Noriega.

In addition, Tilla has been working on the NYC ABE Conference Committee (NYC Consortium for ABE and ESOL) for the past ten years where she is currently the co- chair.  Tilla joined NYS TESOL about 5 years ago and previously served on the Executive Board as VP Outreach.  She is currently the chair of the Adult Education SIG and would love to revitalize this most important special interest group.  She is looking forward to organizing teacher meet-ups and shares as well as mini workshops and Salons.

Tilla loves working with ESOL students who have taught her so much about the goodness of human nature and the needs of English language learners.  She is grateful for the support, guidance, and camaraderie that she has received from NYS TESOL.
