Meet the NYS TESOL Member of the Month
for August 2017

Cho Hang (Jessica) Lei

Cho Hang (Jessica) Lei is a EFL student from Macau SAR, China. She is currently doing her Master’s degree in TESOL (General ) at Teachers College, Columbia University. Being taught English in a exam-oriented approach, she recognised this was not effective in helping students develop their communicative competence in English at all. Therefore, after obtaining her Bachelor’s degree in ESL at the University of Macau, she decided to pursue a higher degree in the U.S. in the hope of bringing innovative teaching methods and techniques back to her city.

Jessica became a member of NYS TESOL in 2016 when she volunteered at the annual conference in Syracuse. She was fascinated and inspired by the enthusiasm and creativity of the teachers. She also attended a Tech in Ten workshop organised by NYS TESOL, in which she learned a lot of innovative classroom technology to improve teaching quality and enhance teaching effectiveness. She then volunteered to serve as a Publicity Chair and Publisher Liaison for the Applied Linguistics Winter Conference 2017. Jessica has also volunteered as a teaching assistant at Chinatown Literacy project, in which weekly ESL lessons are offered to Chinese-speaking English language learners.

Check out our wonderful annual awards and nominate a colleague this year !
