Suzanne Kaplan-Fonseca

Suzanne Kaplan-Fonseca holds an M.A. in TESOL from the School for International Training, with a concentration in Teacher Training and Development; and a B.A. from Skidmore College in Language and Early Childhood Development, with a minor in French, and a concentration in Japanese.

Suzanne began life as a language enthusiast, and began her professional life as a teacher of Japanese and French in private elementary schools. Designing her own major at Skidmore College, she championed the idea that foreign language teaching should begin in public elementary schools, before it became more widely accepted.

She found her way into the field of teaching English to speakers of other languages more than 15 years ago, and has taught in universities (including The New School) and in private language schools in the U.S., Japan, and Mexico. Suzanne has also developed learning materials for online use, served as a mentor for TESOL interns, and presented on her original teaching methods at various regional, national, and international professional conferences - several through NYS TESOL.

At New York University since 2012, Suzanne began as an adjunct, and is currently a Language Lecturer at The American Language Institute and Program Coordinator of Foreign Languages at The Center for Applied Liberal Arts. Suzanne is the recipient of the 2019 Outstanding Service Award at New York University’s School of Professional Studies.

Happiest in the classroom, Suzanne’s teaching engages students in projects designed to foster authentic communication, challenging them to use observation as one of their most valuable tools.

Outside of the classroom, NYS TESOL has been pivotal in Suzanne’s professional development, providing spaces for educators to come together as professionals, within and across disciplines, to advance the field. She is appreciative of the voice NYS TESOL has given her, and looks forward to becoming more active in the organization.
