2017 Teacher Materials Grant Winners

Congratulations to our 2017 NYS TESOL Teacher Materials Grants Recipients!

We are pleased to announce the recipients of our 2017 Teacher Materials Grants and their winning proposals.  NYS TESOL started this program in an effort to support ESL teachers using an innovative language-learning project to engage students in active learning.


Thanks to everyone who participated and helped make this event a success. In case you missed it last year, we are now accepting proposals for the 2018 Teacher Materials Grants.

The 2017 Teacher Materials Grants recipients are:



Nicole Bell, ENL Teacher at Media Specialist at Sodus Central School District, New York. Ms. Bell is using the grant funds to purchase resources such as bilingual dictionaries and native language resources to help the school staff and faculty understand students’ heritage languages better.

Higher Ed.

Aiko Pletch, Lecturer at SUNY New Paltz. Ms. Pletch is using the grant funds to set up an account at the 3D Makerbot Center at SUNY New Paltz. The account would allow teachers to use technology in tailoring a project to their students and their different levels.

Adult Ed.

Elaine Caputo Ferrara, Coordinator of the ESL Program at Jewish Community Center of Staten Island, New York. Ms. Ferrara is using the grant funds to purchase educational materials and crafts, visit the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian in Washington D. C. etc. to enlighten ENL students about Native Americans.
